Can antioxidants give you healthy younger skin? For the last several years, the health buzz has been for antioxidants. You need to have a high level of antioxidants in your diet to help prevent disease or cancer. Antioxidants help protect the body against free radicals or oxidated stress. Some research even suggests this new “miracle” ingredient may help defend against Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease. They bolster our immune system and they reduce high density cholesterol (the bad stuff). All of this evidence points to antioxidants as the new wonder drug.
However, until I saw DermTV I had no idea antioxidants could play such a vital role in promoting healthy skin. Dr. Neal Schultz, in episode #49, “How Antioxidants Protect Your Skin” speaks about how your skin is more exposed to an oxygenated environment than any other part of your body. It also is attacked by ultra-violet light adding to the potential damage of the cellular makeup in your skin. Even when younger skin is bombarded by these free radicals which can disrupt the cell’s DNA, elastic tissue and collagen. Antioxidants work on the cellular level to absorb the free radicals before they can damage the cells. Although the body will distribute antioxidants from your diet throughout your body, in order to maintain younger skin, or to keep healthy skin from becoming damaged, Dr. Schultz recommends using a topical antioxidant ointment.
More than just moisturizing your skin, topical antioxidants will protect your skin – which helps you avoid wrinkles and sagging. In episode #6 Dr Schultz mentions topical antioxidants as one of the three essential skin care products. In episode #74 he briefly mentions using topical antioxidants in addition to sunscreen to help protect the skin from the sun’s damaging rays. But it is in episode #49 that he really discusses the core of the matter, why antioxidants are important and how they work to beat the free radicals and keep your healthy skin healthy.
Antioxidants are not exactly a miracle for your skin, but they are one of the critical components to healthy skin. Younger skin is not just a product of youth, but a symptom of good skin care practice and a healthy lifestyle. If you take care of your skin from inside, then you will definitely see results on the outside. Antioxidants in our diet and in our skin care regime can be a large part of this.
